Came across this video today, and I have to say I’m somewhat stunned by it – I always knew that there was a bit of work involved in making a magazine cover, but I had no idea how much actually happens!!
If it hasn’t appeared abovce, check this video out from Peter Belanger – this is what was involved in shooting a couple of iPhones for the front cover of MacWorld.
I want to point out a couple of important lessons I got from the video:
- You can never have too many lights
- There is a direct relationship between the number of lights you have and the number of reflectors and gobos you will need (and the number of stands, and possibly assistants!)
- You will need to use a P65+ on a 4×5 Sinar. just in case the image also needs to be go on a billboard or small planet
- Once you have the shot, it will require a lot of editing
- When you are editing, you should do so at 2000% magnification
Ok, ok, the lessons learned are a bit “tongue in cheek”, but my point is pretty simple – I am probably never going to get a chance at a magazine cover if that’s what it takes!! Even just hiring all that gear, the space, and the support crew is beyond my current and future means (and owning that kind of stuff is drool-worthy and never going to happen!!)
